I went to Happo backbowls/slackcountry today with some local Japanese guides associated with Hakuba Alpine Guides. It wasn't bad, lots of wind scour and ice with big areas of wind deposit that was soft and chalky. It reminded me of the European Alps. Some instability on steeper loaded slopes.
My brother went back to the Tengu-Kotomi area behind Goryu and got some nice pictures (thats him above).
Eric and Wade went for some proper backcountry touring in the Obinata-Junction peak area. I wish I could have joined them.
Snow tonight and looking good for tomorrow.

Hi SC, thanks for all the maps and GPS data you posted in the last day. I should add a map myself, but it seems you enjoy it as a hobby ;)

I love seeing maps, and my pleasure non-Japanese snowers can get Japanese topo maps with English locaton names where they want to go if it is worthy or not. It will take much much time that Japan Geographical Survey Institute provides English version of Japanese web top maps.

When I was young, my hiking fellows used to tell "Do you carry a map and a compass ?" each other. This time it may be " Do you carry a GPS?" However, I believe maps with a compass have been a neccesary set of light weight compact mountain gear. (One advises to carry three compasses.)
In Japan as well in North America, most professional BC snow guides ask their clients they must have beacons, but never say if they have maps with compass. I do not know the reason why. Probably, guides believe that their clients can not survive when guides lost thier lives....
